Are All Shastras Worthy of Respect?

在佛教中,释迦牟尼佛传下来的佛典,叫做“经”;

The Buddhist teachings that came from Shakyamuni Buddha are called sutras;

the teachings that were composed after the Buddha’s parinirvana by eminent monks and masters throughout history are referred to as shastras.

Of course, the sutras definitely have inconceivable merit.

As for the shastras by eminent monks, masters, and noble ones, although the Buddha himself did not speak them,

if they conform to Buddha’s profound and hidden meanings, then we should also respect them as if Buddha spoke them.

Perhaps some will ask, “Then are all shastras worthy of respect?” The answer is not necessarily!

If people have not thoroughly understood the Buddhist sutras and shastras but travel around spreading the Buddhadharma and writing commentaries,

this does not necessarily benefit them or others.

According to Buddhist teaching, a shastra creator must meet one of three conditions:

A superior creator must be a bodhisattva on the first level or above;

an average one must have directly seen his or her meditation deity;

and a basic one must be thoroughly versed in the five traditional sciences.

Unless these conditions are met, then even if one has written voluminous and all-encompassing compositions,

these shastras still cannot lead beings away from suffering and toward happiness.

Then, do followers debate over the shastras created by bodhisattvas on the first level or above?

There is surely no shortage of disputes.

For instance, regarding the shastras composed by Master Tsongkhapa, Venerable Milarepa, as well as many highly accomplished masters in the Jonang and Sakya traditions, there remains much disagreement today.

But I believe that for us ordinary people, given our limited wisdom,

to refute the teachings of noble bodhisattvas would be like the crow that tries to disguise itself as a great condor—we couldn’t possibly succeed.

Anyone who wishes to create a shastra must not harbor the selfish intention of seeking fame and fortune.

This is also true for teaching, debating, studying, and practicing the Dharma.

Otherwise, without pure altruism,

even though one may go through the motions of doing good deeds, everything done with that impure mind will be utterly meaningless.

Only if one has eliminated all self-interest before beginning to spread the Dharma or study the Buddhist teachings would the merit dispel all adversities like the nectar of devas.
